Who is eligible for veterans benefits?
In Colorado, veterans benefits are available to individuals who have served in the United States military. Generally, those who have served in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, and certain Reserve units, or were members of the Merchant Marine during World War II, are eligible for veterans benefits. In addition, there are certain other criteria that must be met in order to be eligible for benefits. First, the applicant must have been honorably discharged from their military branch. If the applicant did not receive an honorable discharge, they may still be eligible if they are found to have served in a combat zone or if the discharge was upgraded. The veteran must also have been living in Colorado at the time of entering military service and must have lived in Colorado for at least 12 months before applying for benefits. Additionally, the veteran must have been actively serving in the military, or have been discharged for a service-connected disability, in order to be eligible for benefits. Finally, to be eligible for veterans benefits, the applicant must have been a resident of Colorado for at least five years before applying. In some cases, there is an exception to this requirement if the veteran has served in certain theaters of operation. In summary, veterans benefits in Colorado are available to individuals who have served in the U.S. military and meet certain criteria, including honorable discharge, residency requirements, and active service or disability status.
