How do I determine my disability rating?
In Louisiana, veterans who have a disability that was caused or worsened by active-duty service are entitled to disability compensation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). To determine your disability rating, you must first obtain a disability determination from the VA. This is done by completing a disability claim application and submitting the necessary evidence to support your claim. The VA will review your claim and determine the severity of your disability. This is done by assigning a numerical rating, from 0 to 100%, to your disability. The higher the percentage assigned, the more severe the disability is considered to be. To determine your rating, the VA will consider the nature, severity, and duration of your disability. If you disagree with the VA’s disability rating, you have the right to appeal the decision. You can submit a Request for Reconsideration or an Appeal to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. The VA will review your case and determine if a higher percentage is warranted. Your disability rating will directly affect the amount of compensation you may receive from the VA. It is important to note that veterans with a disability rating of at least 10%, or higher, may also be eligible for additional VA benefits such as health care, educational assistance, and vocational rehabilitation, depending on the disability. If you are a veteran and have questions about your disability rating, you may contact the nearest VA Regional Office for more information.
