Are there any benefits available to surviving spouses and dependents?

Yes, surviving spouses and dependents of veterans who were killed in the line of duty or those who died due to service-related disabilities, are eligible for a number of benefits in California. The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) provides a wide range of services to assist surviving spouses and dependents. These benefits help survivors to begin the healing process, ease financial burdens, and provide them with access to resources and support that are essential to their care. Surviving spouses and children may be eligible to receive compensation and benefits through the Dependency and Indemnity Compensation and Survivors Pension program. If a veteran was a member of the California National Guard or the Reserve component of the US military, the surviving family may be eligible for death benefits through the California Military Family Relief Fund. Surviving spouses and dependents may also be eligible for educational assistance through the CalVet College Fee Waiver Program. This program waives student fees for spouses and dependents of deceased veterans at California public colleges, universities, and vocational schools. In addition to these benefits, there are state-funded programs that provide financial and medical assistance to surviving spouses, children, and disabled veterans. These include the Veterans Aid and Attendance Program, which provides up to $1,000 a month to spouses and children of deceased veterans. The Aid and Attendance Program also provides food, clothing, and shelter assistance to veterans in need. Lastly, surviving spouses and children may be able to receive counseling services, care services for disabled veterans, or burial assistance through the California Department of Veterans Affairs.
