What is the VA pension and how do veterans qualify?
The VA pension is a financial benefit that is provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for elderly veterans and their surviving spouses who meet certain criteria. In order to qualify, veterans must have served at least 90 days of active military service, with at least one day during a war, and must be honorably discharged from the armed forces. They also must be at least 65 years of age, or if under the age of 65, they must be permanently and totally disabled, or they must be receiving Social Security Disability Insurance. Additionally, the veteran must have a limited income, meaning his or her annual income must be less than the VA limits set for that year. In North Carolina, the VA offers three types of pension benefits to qualified veterans. The first is the basic pension, which is a monthly payment intended to supplement a veteran’s retirement income. The second is an aid and attendance benefit, which is intended to help pay for personal care or medical services. The third type is the housebound benefit, which provides additional benefits to a veteran who is permanently confined to his or her home due to disability. Qualified veterans can apply for a pension and/or any of the three additional benefits at the nearest VA regional office. Once approved, the VA will send a monthly check to the veteran or their surviving spouse to help cover the costs of care and living expenses.
