What is a VA life insurance policy and how do I get one?

A VA life insurance policy is a type of insurance provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to cover veterans and their families in case of death or disability. To qualify for VA life insurance in Alaska, veterans must be currently serving in the military or have been discharged after at least 90 consecutive days of active-duty service. Veterans may choose from several types of VA life insurance policies, each with different levels of coverage. The most popular VA life insurance policy is Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI). SGLI provides up to $400,000 of coverage for a low monthly premium. Veterans may also choose from Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI), Service-Disabled Veterans’ Insurance (S-DVI), and Veterans’ Mortgage Life Insurance (VMLI). To get a VA life insurance policy, veterans must complete the appropriate application form and submit it to the VA along with proof of eligibility. The VA may require additional documentation, such as a copy of the veteran’s DD Form 214 or discharge paperwork. The VA also offers online applications for certain types of insurance. Once the application is approved, the veteran will receive a life insurance policy and will be responsible for paying the premiums. All veterans in Alaska are encouraged to research and consider the different types of VA life insurance policies available. A VA life insurance policy can provide much-needed financial security for veterans and their families in the event of death or disability.
