What is an Agent Orange claim and how do I file one?
An Agent Orange claim is an application filed by a veteran to receive benefits if they were exposed to Agent Orange while serving in the military. Agent Orange was a herbicide used during the Vietnam War to clear away vegetation and destroy food crops. It contained a chemical called dioxin, which is toxic to humans and can cause a range of medical conditions. In order to file an Agent Orange claim, a veteran must first download VA Form 21-526EZ from the VA website. This form needs to be filled out and returned to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The veteran must provide proof of service in Vietnam or offshore waters of Vietnam between January 9, 1962, and May 7, 1975, and must be able to prove they were exposed to Agent Orange. In addition, the veteran must provide evidence of a current disability that is at least partially caused by their exposure to Agent Orange. This evidence may include medical records, doctor’s notes, and any other relevant documents. Once the claim is filed, it will be reviewed by a team of Veterans Affairs personnel, who will then decide if the veteran is eligible to receive benefits. If the claim is approved, the veteran will receive monetary compensation and can also be eligible for disability benefits, health care, and other services related to their illness. It is important to remember that filing an Agent Orange claim takes time and dedication, but the benefits can be life-changing for veterans who have been exposed to this toxic substance.
