How do veterans access legal services?

Veterans in Washington may access legal services through a variety of avenues. The most direct way is to contact the Veterans Legal Services Clinic, which is sponsored by the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA). This clinic provides free legal assistance to veterans who have been denied benefits they are eligible to receive or have legal issues related to their military service. Veterans may also contact their local Vet Center for assistance. Each Vet Center has two field service representatives to aid veterans in accessing entitlement services or to refer them to other organizations for assistance. Additionally, veterans may contact their local county Veterans Service Office (VSO). VSOs provide general information about veterans’ benefits and can help veterans with applications for benefits and processing claims. They can also refer veterans to the nearest Veterans Affairs Regional Office (VARO), which handles more complex veteran-related matters. Finally, veterans may contact the WSBA’s Military and Veterans Law Program. This program provides legal advice, representation and referrals to organizations or private attorneys specializing in veterans’ benefits law. They also host a quarterly legal clinic for veterans in Washington. All of these organizations provide veteran-specific services which aid them with accessing legal services.
