Is there a program to help veterans with long-term care needs?
In Iowa, veterans with long-term care needs may be eligible for the State Veterans Home program. The program provides Veterans with access to skilled care and rehabilitation services in a long-term care residential setting. There are four residential facilities located in Marshalltown, Marshall County; Marshalltown, Cerro Gordo County; Belle Plaine, Benton County; and Knoxville, Marion County. The Veterans Home program offers a variety of services, including skilled nursing care, domiciliary care, medical supervision, physical therapy, activities and recreation, dietary and nutrition services, and more. Veterans may also receive supportive services such as personal care assistance, mental health services, and medical transportation. The State of Iowa also offers a variety of other benefits and services to Veterans, including education and employment assistance, benefits counseling, health care, financial assistance, and burial services. To be eligible for the State Veterans Home program, Veterans must meet the residency requirements and have a service-connected disability or be a former prisoner of war. Eligible Veterans can apply for the State Veterans Home program through the Department of Veterans Affairs or through their local county Veterans Affairs office.
