How do I apply for survivor benefits?
In Florida, those who are the survivors of a deceased veteran may be eligible to receive financial benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In order to receive these benefits, the survivor must apply for them through the local VA regional office. The first step is to gather all necessary documents and information needed to submit a claim. This includes the veteran’s death certificate, the veteran’s discharge papers (DD Form 214), as well as proof of your relationship to the veteran such as marriage or birth certificates. If the veteran did not have any of these documents, contact the VA regional office to learn about other forms of proof of relationship such as public records. Next, you’ll need to complete a VA Form 21-534EZ, Application for DIC, Death Pension, and/or Accrued Benefits. This form can be submitted electronically, or you can mail, fax, or hand-deliver a paper copy. Once the form is complete, you’ll need to provide supporting documentation, such as those previously mentioned. Finally, you may need to attend a claims interview. This is an opportunity for you to discuss your claim with a VA representative, answer any questions, and provide any additional documents as needed. After the representative reviews your claim, a decision on whether benefits are approved or denied will be made. These are the steps needed to apply for survivor benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in the state of Florida. If you need additional help or information, contact your local VA regional office.
