How do I apply for burial or funeral benefits?

If you are a veteran, or the spouse or dependent of a veteran, residing in Washington, you may be eligible for burial or funeral benefits. To apply for burial or funeral benefits, you must contact the nearest Veterans Affairs (VA) office. You will be asked to provide proof of death, your own and the veteran’s military service, and proof of the veteran’s disability, if applicable. When you apply for burial or funeral benefits, you should be prepared to answer questions about the veteran’s service history, family, and burial and funeral wishes. You can also expect to provide documentation, such as relevant discharge papers, discharge papers of the war the veteran served in, and marriage and birth certificates. The VA can also provide up to $300 in burial and funeral expenses. This includes a burial flag, a government headstone or marker, burial in a national cemetery, and a presidential memorial certificate. To be eligible for burial or funeral benefits, the veteran’s death must be due to a service-connected disability or while they were on active duty. The VA can provide additional burial and funeral assistance, including help with funeral arrangements, financial assistance to offset a portion of the funeral costs, and referrals to other federal benefits. If you have any questions about eligibility, you can contact your local VA office for more information.
