Is there a VA pension program and how do veterans qualify?
Yes, there is a VA pension program in West Virginia and veterans can qualify if they meet certain eligibility requirements. The Veterans Pension or Aid and Attendance programs provide a regular income for veterans who were honorably discharged and meet certain eligibility criteria. To be eligible for a VA Pension an individual must have served at least 90 days on active duty with at least one day during a period of wartime service and must have been discharged under other than dishonorable conditions. In addition, VA Pensions are only available to veterans who have limited income and resources and meet certain age and/or disability requirements. The VA Pension program includes three levels of benefits depending on the veteran’s income and service-related disabilities. The three levels of benefits include basic pension which is provided to veterans with limited income, Housebound benefits which are provided to veterans who are housebound due to disabilities and those who require the aid and attendance of a caregiver, and lastly, special monthly compensation which is provided to veterans who have lost the use of their limbs or have suffered other severe disabilities. In order to claim Veterans Pension benefits, veterans must submit an application to the VA and provide proof of their income, assets, and service-related disability.
