What are the service requirements for veterans disability benefits?
In order to receive veterans disability benefits in Alaska, the veteran must have served in the active military, naval, or air service during a period of armed conflict, such as World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, or other conflict designated by Presidential Executive Order. The veteran must have served in that conflict for at least 90 days and have a service-connected disability that is being evaluated by the Department of Veterans Affairs. In Alaska, veterans must meet all other requirements of Title 38 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, including honorable discharge from service or an honorable or general separation from service. The veteran must provide the appropriate medical documentation supporting their service-connected disability to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The veteran must also show that they are unable to secure or follow a substantially gainful occupation due to the disability and provide financial need documentation. In addition to service and medical requirements, veterans must fill out the Application for Disability Compensation and Related Compensation Benefits form in order to be eligible for veterans disability benefits in Alaska. The application should provide a complete description of the service member’s disability, and it must be signed by the veteran. The application also requires financial and other pertinent information about the veteran’s situation. Alaska accepts two types of forms: the Application for Compensation and Pension (VA Form 21-526) and the Application for Increased Compensation Due to Unemployability (VA Form 21-8940).
