What is the effective date for my disability benefit award?

Your effective date for your disability benefit award is the day you were granted the award. This can be different from the date you applied or the date your benefits started. The effective date is important because it determines the amount of money you receive. Your back pay will be calculated from your effective date and you will also receive benefits for all months of that calendar year. In Washington, for veterans, the effective date for a disability award is usually the day you were given notification that your claim has been granted. The effective date is also the date your back pay (retroactive) benefits start to be paid, provided that you met all the criteria for being eligible. In some cases, the effective date can be earlier than the date you applied or the date when you actually received the award, if you can prove that you had a disability before you applied for benefits. This is called “establishment of an earlier effective date”. To determine if you are eligible for an earlier effective date, you should contact the local Veterans Service Office in Washington. It is important to note that the effective date will be the same, regardless of when you start receiving your benefits. This means that if, for any reason, you wait to receive your benefits, your effective date will not change.
