How does my disability rating affect my benefits?

Your disability rating can have an impact on the benefits you may receive in South Carolina. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) assigns your disability rating depending on the severity of your disability. The VA evaluates your medical records and decides on a percentage rating, with a rating of 0% to 100%, with 100% being the most severe disability. Those with an evaluated disability rating of 30% or higher may be eligible to receive compensation, based on the exact rating. The payments are not the same across the board, and each percentage above 30% can add onto the amount received. For example, those with a 30% disability rating will receive $715 per month, whereas a 90% disability rating will receive $2559 per month. Additionally, those rated at 50% or higher may be eligible for additional benefits from the VA, such as additional benefits for their dependents and free health care coverage. Those with 100% ratings may be eligible for additional housing or monetary compensation that is not available to those with lower ratings. To determine your eligibility and the amount of compensation you can receive, you must submit a VA Form 21-526, or a claim for compensation. The VA will then review your information and assign your disability rating. Knowing your rating can help you understand what benefits you may be eligible for.
