What are the differences between special monthly compensation and regular monthly compensation?

Special monthly compensation (SMC) is a type of financial benefit eligibility given to veterans who have been disabled as a result of their service. It is in addition to the regular monthly compensation (RMC) to which veterans may be entitled. Regular monthly compensation is the monthly payment a veteran is entitled to receive as a result of their disability. The amount of this payment is determined by the amount of impairment rating assigned by the department of veterans affairs. Generally, the higher the rating, the more RMC a veteran receives. Special monthly compensation is a higher rate of payment for veterans with more severe impairments. This can include higher rates of compensation for veterans who have lost use of certain body parts, are suffering from depression or anxiety, or are bedridden. To be eligible for SMC, veterans need to show proof of specific disability or impairments. These conditions must also be permanent and not treatable. In some cases, veterans need to show proof of being dependent on others for daily activities. In essence, the main differences between SMC and RMC is the amount of payment. Regular monthly compensation is the standard compensation veterans receive while special monthly compensation is an additional payment for those with more severe levels of disability. SMC is also eligible for those dependent on others for daily activities, with the amount of payment determined by the severity of the disability.
