What are the differences between special monthly compensation and regular monthly compensation?
Special monthly compensation (SMC) and regular monthly compensation (RMC) are both types of compensation offered to veterans in North Carolina with a disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). SMC is a higher, supplemental form of disability compensation awarded to veterans with special circumstances for their service-connected disability. These special circumstances include loss of use of a limb, loss of sight, and needing aid and attendance from another person. SMC also applies to veterans who are permanently housebound. On the other hand, RMC is the base rate of disability compensation, which can range from 10-100 percent, depending on the veteran’s disability rating and the total number of disabilities the veteran has suffered. RMC is awarded for a service-connected disability, such as a physical injury or emotional trauma, and is not based on the needs of a veteran, as is SMC. The amount a veteran receives for either SMC or RMC can vary, based on circumstances such as the veteran’s income, dependent status, and number of dependents. Additionally, certain veterans may be eligible for increased compensation depending on circumstances such as being in a nursing home or living in a state-approved medical facility. In most cases, SMC is a higher rate of compensation than RMC. Veterans should always check with the VA to determine the full benefits they may be eligible for.
