How do I transfer my disability benefits to my dependents?
If you are an eligible veteran living in South Carolina, you may be able to transfer your disability benefits to your dependents. This process is known as Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC). In order to transfer your disability benefits to a dependent, you must have been rated with a 100 percent disabled rating from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). You must also determine that you are the parent of a minor child, the dependent parent of a veteran, or the surviving spouse of a veteran who died from a service-connected disability. Once you meet the eligibility requirements, you will need to submit an Application for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (Form 21-534) to the VA’s regional office. You will need to include all pertinent information, including the veteran’s service dates, their Social Security Number, and a copy of the veteran’s death certificate (if applicable). After the application is submitted, the VA will review it to make sure all requirements are met and then award the benefits to the eligible dependents. It is important to note that DIC benefits are not eligible for transfer unless the veteran had a 100 percent disabled rating from the VA. Additionally, the VA may require additional proof in order to determine eligibility.
