How do I transfer my disability benefits to my dependents?

Transferring your disability benefits to your dependents is a process that requires a few different steps. The main step is to submit the appropriate forms with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The form you will need to submit is VA Form 21-534EZ, "Application for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) or Death Pension by a Surviving Spouse or Child." You will need to provide basic information about yourself and your dependents on the form, such as name, Social Security Number, and date of birth. If your dependent is a minor, you will also need the name and address of their legal guardian or the natural guardian. Additionally, you will need to provide the dates of your active duty service, as well as the dates and locations of any military service-connected disabilities or injuries you may have. Finally, you need to attach any additional supporting documents that prove your disability and/or your dependent’s relationship to you. This can include marriage certificates, birth certificates, and death certificates. Once you have everything in order, mail your completed form and documents to the VA Regional Office in Washington. It can take several months for the VA to process your request and approve your dependent’s transfer of benefits. During this time, you should contact the VA Regional Office to check on the status of your application. Once the transfer is approved, your dependents will begin to receive the benefits you are entitled to.
