Can I receive additional benefits for my dependent family members?

Yes, you may be able to receive additional benefits for your dependent family members in the state of Virginia if you are a veteran receiving disability benefits. Virginia offers several financial assistance programs for veterans with disabilities, including Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) and Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) for family members. DEA is a program which provides educational assistance to eligible dependents of veterans who have been rated as having a total disability or worse and are in receipt of disability compensation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or eligible for compensation due to a disability. The program pays up to 45 months of educational benefits at approved colleges, universities, and community colleges. DIC is a monthly payment that is issued to eligible survivors of veterans who died from service-connected disabilities or to survivors of veterans who were in receipt of disability compensation for a service-connected disability at the time of their death. Additionally, DIC may be available for certain survivors whose veteran died while rated as having a total disability or worse. In order to receive either of these programs, the veteran must first apply for disability benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and be rated as having a total disability or worse. The veteran must then provide proof of eligibility to the Veterans Affairs office in Virginia in order to be considered for these additional benefits.
