What is service connection?

Service connection is a legal term used to describe the relationship between a service-related injury or illness and a veteran’s military service. When a veteran suffers from a disability, injury, or illness related to their service, they may be eligible for service-connected disability compensation. In North Carolina, service connection is important because the state has programs in place to provide veterans with disability compensation if they meet the service-connected criteria. To be eligible for service-connected disability compensation, a veteran must have a disability that was caused either by an injury or illness sustained or aggravated during their time in the military or by a medical condition that existed prior to military service for which the veteran seeks compensation. Additionally, the veteran must provide evidence to prove that the disability is related to their military service. This evidence may include copies of medical records, discharge papers, or other supporting documents. If a veteran’s claim for service-connected disability compensation is approved, they may be eligible for a monthly tax-free benefit from the state of North Carolina. The amount of the benefit depends on the severity of the disability and the veteran’s income. The state also provides additional benefits to veterans who are service-connected, such as job training and education, housing assistance, and health care.
