What is a combined disability rating?

A combined disability rating, also known as a “total disability rating”, is a concept used in South Carolina veterans disability law. When a veteran has more than one disability, the different disabilities are combined together to create a single disability rating. This rating is determined by adding up the ratings of each disability and then multiplying the amount by a certain percentage. For example, if a veteran has two disabilities rated at 20%, then the combined rating is 30%. This is because 20% x 1.5 = 30%, which is the combined rating. In South Carolina, the percentage used to calculate the combined disability rating is often referred to as the “synergy” rate. This rate is typically around 1.5, however, it can be adjusted depending on the specific conditions of the veteran’s disabilities. In some cases, the combined disability rating can also be used in combination with other benefits, such as Special Monthly Compensation, or SMC benefits. This can result in a higher disability rating than what the veteran would receive with just the combined rating. Ultimately, a combined disability rating can provide a veteran with more comprehensive benefits than what would be provided with individual disability ratings. This is why it is important for veterans to understand how their disability ratings are being combined and how this impacts their overall benefits.
