What is the ‘Aid and Attendance’ benefit?

The ‘Aid and Attendance’ benefit is a special provision offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to veterans who require assistance in order to live independently. This benefit provides additional compensation to qualified veterans who require the help of another person to perform the basic activities of daily living. In Florida, the ‘Aid and Attendance’ benefit is available to veterans who served in an active duty capacity and were honorably discharged. To be eligible for the ‘Aid and Attendance’ benefit, a veteran must meet certain eligibility requirements. These include being over the age of 65, having served in an active duty capacity and having a disability which requires the assistance of another person to perform the basic activities of daily living. Additionally, the veteran must not be receiving any other VA-related benefits, such as the Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), or the Special Monthly Pension. If the veteran meets the eligibility requirements, they may be eligible to receive up to $1,228 per month in additional compensation through the ‘Aid and Attendance’ benefit. This additional compensation can go towards out-of-pocket medical and care costs for the veteran. Veterans can apply for the ‘Aid and Attendance’ benefit through the local VA office in their state.
