What is a presumptive service-connected disability?
A presumptive service-connected disability is a disability presumed to be related to military service in Washington State. This means that veterans in Washington do not have to prove their disability is related to their service in order to receive disability benefits. Veterans can receive disability benefits for a qualifying medical condition or injury that is connected to their service in some way. For example, a veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be eligible for benefits if it is service-connected. Some disabilities are considered to be “presumptive” because there is a high likelihood they are related to military service. These conditions may include hearing loss, PTSD, respiratory disorders, neuropathy, and certain cancers. If a veteran in Washington has one of these presumptive disabilities, they are not required to submit proof of service connection. However, veterans should still provide medical evidence linking their condition to their service in order to receive the full range of benefits. Presumptive service-connected disabilities can provide important financial support for veterans and their families. It is important that those who qualify for presumptive service-connected disabilities apply for their benefits.
