What are the requirements for a disability rating?
The requirements for a disability rating in California vary depending on the type and severity of a veteran’s disability. Generally speaking, in order to receive a disability rating in California, a veteran must first prove that he or she has an illness or injury that is a direct result of their military service. This proof can be provided in the form of medical records, witness statements, or any other form of evidence that is accepted by the Veterans Administration (VA). Once a veteran has established that their injury or illness is linked to their military service, they must then demonstrate that their disability has caused a degree of functional impairment. This requires the veteran to submit a medical report that demonstrates how their injury or illness affects their ability to work, carry out everyday activities, or any other area of their life. The VA will then evaluate the evidence provided by the veteran, as well as any other related evidence, and will make a determination on the degree of functional impairment, which will be expressed as a percentage. This percentage, also known as a disability rating, will then be used to determine the veteran’s eligibility for benefits or any other assistance they may be eligible for.
