How are disability benefits payments determined?
In California, disability payments for veterans are determined by the severity of their disability related to military service. To qualify for disability benefits, veterans must demonstrate that they have a service-connected disability that is rated at 10% or higher. The first step in determining disability payments is to assess a veteran’s disability rating. This rating is assigned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and is based on the extent to which a veteran’s disability affects their ability to carry out their daily activities. The higher the rating, the more severe the disability and the higher the monthly compensation payment a veteran is eligible for. The veterans’ disability rating is then used to calculate their monthly compensation payment. A veteran receives a fixed rate for every 10% increment of their disability rating, that increases with higher ratings and may include additional money for dependents such as a spouse or children. The VA also offers additional benefits to veterans. These include such things as education support, vocational rehabilitation, home loan program and more. Veterans may also be eligible for special monthly compensation and additional allowances depending on the nature and severity of their disability. Finally, in some cases veterans may be eligible for other disability payouts from private organizations like insurance companies. Additionally, veterans may be able to appeal their rating and request a higher rating if their disability has worsened since their initial assessment.
