What is a vehicle rollover?
A vehicle rollover is an accident in which a vehicle tips over onto its side or roof. It usually occurs when a vehicle is traveling at a high rate of speed, or when the driver takes a sharp turn. Vehicle rollovers can result in serious injury or death for the driver and any passengers. In West Virginia, there are specific laws that regulate vehicle rollovers. The Vehicle Rollover Safety Act of 1995 requires all motor vehicles to have installed a safety device in order to prevent rollover accidents. This device, known as an Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system, is designed to keep the vehicle from tipping over during a sharp turn or when the driver is going too fast. The law also requires all operators of motor vehicles to be trained in how to handle a vehicle rollover emergency. This includes how to safely roll the vehicle back onto its wheels and how to safely evacuate passengers and the driver from the vehicle. Lastly, the law requires that all vehicles have safety belts installed in the front seats and that all passengers wear them at all times while the vehicle is in motion. This is to protect them in the event of a vehicle rollover. By abiding by these laws, drivers can help to prevent vehicle rollovers and protect themselves and their passengers from serious injury or death.
