What is violent crime?

Violent crime is a type of criminal activity that involves the use or threatened use of physical force or violence against another person. In California, some violent crimes are categorized as felonies and are punishable by a lengthy prison sentence. Common examples of violent crimes include assault, battery, homicide, kidnapping, and robbery. Assault is the intentional use of physical force or threatened use of physical force against another person. Battery is the actual physical attack on another person, consisting of either contact or attempted contact with the person. Homicide is the killing of another person, either intentionally or unintentionally. Kidnapping is the abduction of someone by force against their will. And robbery is the taking of something of value while threatening harm to someone. In California, violent crime is taken very seriously. Depending on the severity of the crime, punishment can range from a minor fine or probation to a long prison sentence and even capital punishment. In addition to the criminal penalties imposed, there are also consequences that offenders face such as loss of professional licenses, restrictions on gun ownership, and even imprisonment.
