Are there any international laws that address violent crime?

Yes, there are international laws that address violent crime. The United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) is an example of an international treaty that deals with issues of organized crime, including violent crimes. This treaty was adopted in 2000 and has been ratified by over 200 states. It contains three main parts: the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children; the Protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air; and the Protocol against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms. Additionally, the UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women and its accompanying Resolution 1325 are important international laws that address violence against women. The resolution calls for the protection of women’s rights and the prevention and redress of violent crimes against them. Additionally, the International Criminal Court in The Hague prosecutes perpetrators of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. This includes any violent acts committed against civilians, such as rape, torture, and forced displacement. In West Virginia, state law applies to violent crimes as well as any applicable international laws.
