What is wage and hour law?

Wage and hour law is a set of laws in the state of Florida that govern how employers must compensate their employees for their labor. These laws cover such topics as minimum wages, overtime, tips, and other related areas. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is responsible for administering wage and hour laws to ensure that employers are following the rules. In Florida, the minimum wage is currently $8.56 per hour, as of 2020, with some exceptions for tipped employees, minors, or employees with disabilities. Additionally, the state requires employers to pay overtime to non-exempt employees for any and all hours they work over forty during a work week. The overtime rate is one and one half times the employee’s regular rate. Other wage and hour laws in Florida require employers to pay tipped employees at least half of the normal minimum wage, provide employees with rest periods and meals, and pay employees who are discharged or quit in a timely manner. It is also important that employers maintain accurate records of employee hours and wages to ensure they are in compliance with the law. Overall, wage and hour law in Florida is in place to protect employees and ensure they are fairly compensated for the work that they do. It’s important for employers to be aware of these laws and remain compliant with them to avoid legal complications.
