What are the restrictions on working hours for minors?
In Indiana, minors (persons under the age of 18) have restrictive rules regarding working hours. According to Child Labor Law (IC 22-8-2-7), minors under the age of 16 are not allowed to work more than 8 hours in one day or more than 40 hours in one week. Minors aged 16 and 17 do not have a daily limit, but cannot work more than 48 hours in one week. Additionally, minors aged 16 and 17 are subject to the minimum wage law. They can be paid a minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. However, they are also subject to the restrictions on hours of work (see above). Minors aged 16 and 17 are not allowed to work before 7 a.m. or after 11 p.m., unless they have special permission from the Indiana Department of Labor. Minors aged 14 and 15 are not allowed to work before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m. on a school night, and not before 7 a.m. or after 9 p.m. on a non-school night. Finally, minors aged 13 and under are not allowed to work at all. This includes work as a babysitter or newspaper carrier. These regulations are in place to protect minors from working too long or too late, and to ensure they have sufficient time for school, rest, and leisure activities.
