What are the rules regarding meal and rest breaks?

In Tennessee, employers are required to provide meal and rest breaks depending on the hours their employees work. For employers of non-exempt employees, non-exempt employees must be provided with an uninterrupted 30 minute meal break if they work more than 4 hours. Additionally, if employees work more than 6 consecutive hours, they must be allowed an uninterrupted 20 minute rest break. Non-exempt employees are also eligible to receive a 10 minute rest break for every 4 consecutive hours worked. Exempt employees are not entitled to meal or rest breaks as their hours worked are expected to remain consistent throughout the day. Employers are also obligated to pay non-exempt employees who are requested to work during their meal or rest breaks. If employers fail to provide the required meal or rest breaks or compensate employees while on breaks, then the employer may be liable for unpaid wages. It is important for employers to be mindful of these meal and rest break requirements and ensure that their employees receive the meal and rest breaks to which they are entitled. If employers have any questions, they should seek legal advice from a qualified attorney to ensure they are compliant with applicable laws.
