What is water availability and allocation?
Water availability and allocation refer to the ways in which water is made available and allocated within a given geographic area. In Missouri, water availability and allocation is largely determined by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). The MDNR is responsible for ensuring that the state’s surface and groundwater resources are managed in a sustainable way. In order to do this, the MDNR manages water availability and allocation through several different programs. These include the Missouri Water Resources Management Program, which allocates surface water, groundwater, and other sources of water across the state; the Water Supply Enhancement and Protection Program, which manages and monitors the quantity of groundwater available; and the Riparian Water Use Program, which is responsible for managing and protecting riparian areas, or areas that have water running through them. The MDNR also works with several other organizations to ensure that water availability and allocation are adequate and equitable. These include local and state agencies, agricultural and industrial users, and environmental groups. Through these collaborations, the MDNR is able to ensure that the state’s water resources are managed in an effective and equitable way. Overall, water availability and allocation in Missouri are managed by the MDNR in order to ensure sustainable water use across the state. Through programs such as the Missouri Water Resources Management Program and the Riparian Water Use Program, the MDNR is able to ensure that water resources are managed in an equitable and sustainable way.
