How is water quality regulated?

In Tennessee, water quality is regulated by the Water Quality Control Act of 1977. This act established standards for water quality and assigns responsibility for monitoring and controlling water pollution to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The Act gives the TDEC authority to set permits, inspect facilities, and develop and enforce regulations related to water quality. The Clean Water Act of 1972 also requires the TDEC to establish water quality standards for surface water, groundwater, and public water supplies. These standards are designed to ensure that Tennessee’s water resources remain safe for recreational and industrial uses. The TDEC monitors water-quality standards and inspects facilities that have the potential to discharge pollutants into the environment or into the state’s waters. The TDEC also works with stakeholder groups, such as watershed councils, to develop and implement water-quality improvement plans. These plans may include the implementation of best management practices, such as conservation or stormwater capture and utilization. They may also include water-quality monitoring, public education, and funding for watershed and water-quality protection projects. Ultimately, Tennessee’s water-quality regulations and standards aim to protect the state’s water resources and ensure that Tennesseans have access to clean and safe drinking water. TDEC works hard to ensure that the state’s water quality is maintained and improved wherever possible.
