How is water quality maintained?

The state of Washington takes steps to maintain water quality throughout the state. The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) is in charge of setting and enforcing water quality standards. To keep waterways clean and safe, Ecology uses the water quality standards set by the Clean Water Act, Washington State’s Water Pollution Control Act, and other applicable state and federal laws. Ecology also works with local, regional, and tribal governments to control water pollution and manage stormwater runoff. This includes working with local governments and tribes on water quality monitoring plans and programs. Ecology also examines water quality data from inside and outside of Washington state to identify potential sources of pollution or contamination in our waterways. To further protect water quality, Ecology inspects municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants and industrial discharge points, and issues permits for water withdrawals for new or expanded facilities. The permits ensure that the facility does not withdraw too much water or create a problem with water quality. Finally, Ecology also works to protect the state’s water resources. This includes the protection of surface and ground water, the control of land use activities that could impact water quality, and the development of water quality plans, policies, and regulations. By taking these steps, the state of Washington is committed to maintaining water quality and protecting its citizens’ right to clean and healthy water.
