What is the False Claims Act?

The False Claims Act is a state law in Mississippi that protects whistleblowers from retaliation by employers. It is also known as the Qui Tam law. The False Claims Act makes it unlawful for Mississippi employers to fire, suspend, demote, or threaten an employee for reporting fraud against the government or reporting illegal activities. It also makes it a crime to present false claims for payment or approval. Under the False Claims Act, whistleblowers are allowed to file a complaint with the state court and seek a reward for doing so. This reward can be in the form of a percentage of the money recovered from the defendant in the case. The State of Mississippi may also pursue a qui tam action if it believes that the defendant has violated the False Claims Act. The False Claims Act also encourages other whistleblowers to come forward and report fraud or illegal activities. It provides them with protections from employer retaliation, as well as a financial reward. The False Claims Act was enacted to protect taxpayers’ money from being stolen, squandered, or misused by companies and individuals who take advantage of government programs and contracts.
