What is a sealed claim?
A sealed claim is a type of whistleblowing law in Florida that helps protect people from retribution for reporting obviously illegal activities. It allows them to keep their identity a secret while filing a claim. This allows them to bring forth a claim without fear that they will be identified or retaliated against for doing so. When a person files a sealed claim, the Florida Commission on Human Relations has the power to investigate and make sure the person’s rights are not violated before any action is taken. This includes ensuring that the person who files the claim is protected from any negative consequences that may arise from filing the claim. It is important to note that the identity of the whistleblower is never revealed to any third party this process. The sealed claim allows a whistleblower to bring forth claims without fear of retribution. This encourages people to report illegal activities that they may notice in their workplace or in society as a whole. This provides greater protection for those who seek to do the right thing and report wrongdoings, knowing that their identity will remain confidential. It also serves to hold those who commit illegal activities accountable for their actions.
