What happens after a whistleblower claim has been filed?

After a whistleblower claim has been filed in Mississippi, the whistleblower must wait for the court system to determine if their claim is valid. The claim must first be reviewed by the Mississippi State Attorney General who will assess whether or not it falls under the state whistleblower law. If it does, then the Mississippi Public Employees Relations Board will conduct an investigation into the claim. The investigation will be conducted by a panel of experts and can involve interviewing witnesses, analyzing documents, and other methods of evidence-gathering. If the panel of experts finds that the whistleblower has a valid claim under the state whistleblower law, they will issue a report recommending that the claim should be pursued. This report will be given to the Mississippi State Attorney General and the Mississippi Office of the Inspector General, who will then decide whether or not to pursue legal action against the person or entity accused of wrongful conduct. The whistleblower may also have the option to take legal action themselves, even if the government chooses not to pursue their claim. If this is the case, they will have the option to file a civil lawsuit against the person or entity they believe to be responsible for the wrongful conduct. This case will be heard in a court of law and the whistleblower will be able to present their evidence in the hopes of being awarded damages or other forms of compensation.
