What is a reward program?

A reward program in New Jersey is designed to incentivize individuals to come forward and report misconduct that is taking place in their workplace or other situations. This type of program is important because it gives whistleblowers – people who report misconduct by their employers, colleagues, or other individuals or organizations that are required to abide by existing laws and regulations – the chance to be compensated for coming forward and helping to enforce the law. Rewards for whistleblowers can range from a small sum of money to more significant awards; however, in order to be eligible, the whistleblower must provide certain information that proves the claims of wrongdoing and must be the first to bring the misconduct to the attention of the authorities. In New Jersey, the Division of Law Enforcement and Professional Standards administers the reward program, and payouts are typically dependent on the type of misconduct, the amount of money involved, and the amount of money recovered from the offender. Whistleblower reward programs have been shown to increase the number of reports of wrongdoing and help promote a safe and healthy environment in the workplace. By offering a financial reward, this type of program encourages individuals to come forward and speak out about any illegal activities that they are aware of.
