What is the difference between whistleblowing and whistleblowing protection?

Whistleblowing is the act of revealing private, confidential, or legally protected information to the public or an authority figure in order to expose a wrongdoing or a violation of the law. The decision to do so often comes with serious consequences, such as job loss or legal repercussions. Whistleblower protection, on the other hand, is legislation that grants legal protection to individuals who report the misconduct of their employers or organizations. In Mississippi, the Whistleblower Act of 2017 provides “protection from retaliatory action for certain employees who report or disclose information to their supervisors or other appropriate persons” (Mississippi Code Section 71-7-601). The Whistleblower Act prevents employers from penalizing or firing employees who report any action taken by the employer that violates the law. In short, whistleblowing is the act of reporting illegal activities, while whistleblower protection is the legal protection granted to whistleblowers in order to protect them from any negative consequences for reporting these activities.
