What is an occupational disease?
An occupational disease is an illness that is caused by workers being exposed to certain conditions in the workplace. It can occur over a long period of time, and may even be caused by work-related activities that the employee is unaware of. In Washington, occupational diseases are recognized as compensable injuries under the state workers’ compensation law. In order to be eligible for benefits, the employee must prove that the disease was caused by the working conditions at their job. Some common examples of occupational diseases include carpal tunnel syndrome, hearing loss, and mesothelioma. Chemical exposure, repetitive motion, and vibration can all lead to these diseases. Workers could also be at risk of getting an occupational disease due to long-term exposure to radiation or loud noises. Those suffering from an occupational disease can be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits including medical and vocational rehabilitation, temporary or permanent disability benefits, and death benefits. In order to receive benefits, the worker must provide medical evidence that the workplace is responsible for their illness. Occupational diseases can be difficult to diagnose and prove. It is important for workers in Washington to understand their rights under the workers’ compensation law and speak to an attorney if they think they may be suffering from an occupational disease.
