What is a vocational rehabilitation plan?

A vocational rehabilitation plan is a plan that is used in California workers compensation law to help an injured worker return to suitable employment. This plan may involve medical recovery, job retraining, or other supportive services to assist the injured worker in achieving his or her goals. Vocational rehabilitation plans are developed on a case-by-case basis, but can include a variety of components such as educational and retraining courses, medical treatment, job search and placement assistance, as well as job placement assessments. Medical professionals typically develop the plan by studying the injured worker’s physical limitations and determining the type of job that would best suit their condition. These plans are intended to help injured workers return to suitable employment as quickly and safely as possible. The goal of the plan is to provide an equitable solution to the injured worker and to ensure they have the skills and resources necessary to find gainful employment. In some cases, the vocational rehabilitation plan may also involve additional services such as adaptation of the workplace to better suit the worker’s needs or help with transportation. This plan may also provide temporary financial assistance to help the injured worker transition into their new job. Vocational rehabilitation plans are designed to provide injured workers with the resources they need to find employment that is suitable for their current condition or to assist them in finding a job that will better suit their condition. It is important to note that this plan cannot replace the lost wages the worker has experienced from their injury.
