What is a temporary total disability?

A temporary total disability (TTD) is a type of workers’ compensation law that applies in California. This type of law pays benefits to an injured employee who, as a result of their injury, is temporarily unable to return to their job. These benefits, which consist of weekly payments, are designed to help the injured worker recover and pay for their living expenses while they are unable to work. Under California workers’ compensation law, an employee may be classified as temporarily totally disabled if they are unable to work because of the injury they sustained while performing their job duties. The injured worker must also still be under medical care and not able to perform their job or engage in any other gainful employment. Workers must also report their injury and obtain a doctor’s evaluation for their injury in order to qualify for TTD payments. Once an employee has been approved for TTD payments, they will be paid two-thirds of their average weekly wage for the duration of their disability. The payments will continue until the employee has recovered from their injury and is approved to return to their job, or until the employee is considered to have reached the maximum medical improvement from the injury. In these cases, the employee may be eligible for additional benefits or compensation.
