Can I be fired because of discrimination?

In Ohio, it is illegal for an employer to fire an employee due to discrimination. Discrimination in this regard relates to race, religion, ethnicity, gender, age, national origin, disability, or genetic information. It is also illegal to fire an employee due to their political affiliation or beliefs. Under Ohio law, employers have an obligation to create a work environment free from discrimination. If an employee feels they have been wrongfully terminated due to discrimination, they can file a complaint with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission or the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. If it is found that an employee has been wrongfully terminated based on discrimination, they may be entitled to compensation for lost wages, damages for emotional distress, and/or attorney’s fees. Employers may also be ordered to reinstate the employee to their prior position or provide a similar one. Ultimately, wrongful termination law is complex and should not be navigated alone. If you feel that you were wrongfully terminated due to discrimination, it is best to contact an experienced attorney who can review the details of your case and advise you on the best course of action.
