What is an insurance adjuster?

An insurance adjuster is a professional who investigates and evaluates insurance claims for a particular insurer or other insured party. Adjusters typically work for the insurance company to determine the amount of money that should be paid for a given claim. In New Jersey, the Bureau of Securities regulates insurance adjusters to ensure fair and accurate claims processing. Adjusters assess the validity of claims and may need to interview witnesses and review medical records, police reports, and other documents. They also inspect and photograph damaged property, assess the extent of damages, and research applicable laws to determine the insurance company’s legal obligations. At the end of their investigation, adjusters normally put together a written report that includes a description of the accident, an assessment of the damages, and a recommendation to the insurer or insured party on how much money should be paid for the claim. The adjuster must stay within the legal boundaries of the state law and cannot pay out any more than the insurance policy covers. In addition, they must make sure that the amount of compensation is fair and just. This means that they must factor in things like inflation, the age of the property or injury, and the severity of the case.
