What is a settlement conference?
A settlement conference is a meeting where two parties involved in an accident come together to discuss a possible resolution to their dispute without involving a court. This type of meeting is often facilitated by an impartial third-party mediator who works to help the two sides reach an agreement that is beneficial to both. In California, settlement conferences must be held before a personal injury lawsuit can be filed in court. This allows the parties to discuss the facts of the case, negotiate a settlement amount, and reduce the amount of litigation costs (and legal fees). The settlement conference also allows both sides to fully understand their respective positions and how they can come to an agreement without spending time and money in court. In California, many pre-litigation settlement conferences are held before a case ever goes to court, helping both sides avoid lengthy legal proceedings and giving them the opportunity to come to a resolution in a timely manner.
