How does Admiralty Law relate to international law?

Admiralty Law, or Maritime Law, relates to international law in a number of ways. Admiralty Law governs the activities on the high seas, which, by definition, touches upon the international sphere. Any maritime incidents or disputes will be adjudicated by a court of admiralty, and, as such, the law is applicable to international shipping. All vessels, regardless of the country of registration, are bound by Admiralty Law. Additionally, international agreements regarding the transportation of goods and passengers at sea are governed by Admiralty Law, such as the Hague-Visby Rules and the Hamburg Rules. These agreements, while not technically part of international law, are binding upon the vessels, crews, and passengers, making them an important part of international activities. The jurisdiction of admiralty courts in Kansas also extends to cases involving non-traditional vessels, such as submersibles, submarines, or unmanned vessels, so long as they are licensed and registered with the U.S. Coast Guard. This further contributes to the connection between Admiralty Law and international law, particularly as more and more unmanned vessels become part of the international shipping sector. Admiralty Law is an important element of the global legal system, as it ensures that vessels, crews, passengers, and cargos are safe, and that all parties are protected by law. As such, it is an integral part of international law.
