Admiralty Law, commonly known as Maritime Law, is a branch of civil law that governs business and trade activities, and other matters related to navigation and shipping, in and around Virginia. Admiralty Law applies to all vessels, hovercraft, and other watercraft that are used for commercial purposes on navigable waters. This includes private vessels, recreational vessels, commercial fishing vessels, tugs and barges, and recreational yachts.
