What is the scope of Admiralty Law with regard to domestic maritime law?

Admiralty law is a distinct body of law covering maritime activities. With regard to domestic maritime law in California, it governs the handling of disputes and legal issues arising from ships and other vessels within the jurisdiction of the United States. This includes matters of tort, contract, cargo, salvage, collisions, transportation of goods and services, and vessel construction and registration. When it comes to criminal matters, admiralty law applies to offenses committed on the seas and near the waters of the United States. This includes piracy, drug smuggling, illegal fishing, and environmental offenses. Admiralty law covers businesses operating in a maritime environment such as shipbuilders, vessel owners, charterers, and marine insurers. Admiralty law also governs admiralty liens (maritime liens) which are liens claimed against a vessel for services or materials provided to the vessel for its operation. Admiralty law in California also covers disputes between members of a ship’s crew during the voyage. In addition, this body of law governs the way a vessel is managed and how the vessels and crew are treated when in port. This includes labor laws, wages, and related benefits. Lastly, admiralty law covers the enforcement of maritime contracts and, when necessary, the enforcement of judgments in the US district courts. These measures may help victims of maritime law violations to receive compensation for their losses.
