What is the adoption process like?
Adoption is a legal process to make a child a permanent part of a family. In Delaware, the process for adopting a child is set by state laws. There are generally three stages in the adoption process in Delaware. The first stage is the Home Study. The home study looks at the family’s background and the prospective adoptive parents’ ability to provide a safe and loving home for their adopted child. The home study includes an in-depth evaluation of the family’s home, financial situation, health, lifestyle, and readiness to adopt. The second stage is the Placement stage. In this stage, the agency or lawyer will present the adoptive family with any potential children for adoption. If both the family and child agree to the adoption, the required legal documents will be completed and the adoptive parents will be allowed to take the child home. The third and final stage is the Finalization stage. This is when the adoption is officially filed in the court system. During this stage, the adoptive parents will need to appear in court and provide evidence that all legal requirements have been met. The court will review the case and, if everything is in order, the adoption will be finalized. After adoption is finalized, the adoptive parents are given full legal and custodial responsibility of the child and will be responsible for providing for the physical, mental, and emotional needs of the child. Adoption is a lifelong commitment that should be taken seriously and with great care.
