What is a transracial adoption?

A transracial adoption is when a child is adopted by adoptive parents who are a different race than the child. This means that the child is adopted by parents of a different ethnic or racial background than their own. For example, if a white family adopts a child of African or Asian descent, this would be considered a transracial adoption. In Delaware, the process for a transracial adoption is similar to any other type of adoption. The prospective adoptive parents must first meet the qualifications of the state and complete the required home study process. This includes background checks and interviews with family and friends. Once the prospective parents have been approved, they must complete an adoption application and be approved by a judge. The state of Delaware also has specific requirements for transracial adoptions. For example, there must be evidence presented that the adopting family is culturally competent and has the ability to provide an environment that is conducive to a successful transracial adoption. Additionally, the state requires that parents receive counseling or training to provide adequate support to their child related to transracial adoption. The state of Delaware considers transracial adoption to be a positive opportunity to both the adoptive family and the child. The hope is that the adoptive parents will provide the child with love, guidance, support, and an understanding of both their birth culture and the culture of the adoptive parents.
